Whether you are using an electric toothbrush or a manual one, the way you brush your teeth makes a huge impact on your teeth and gum health. Here are some tips to be sure you are brushing your teeth efficiently and correctly.
When brushing your teeth, it is recommended to brush your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need toothpaste to have good oral hygiene. Toothpaste acts as an abrasive that can help smooth the surface of the teeth, but brushing your teeth with water also has a similar effect in removing plaque and bacteria in the mouth. While toothpaste may not be necessary when brushing your teeth, a small amount (a pea sized dollop) can help polish your teeth and help eliminate bad breath.
The type of toothbrush you use also makes an impact on how you should brush your teeth.
If you are using an electric toothbrush:
It is best to hold the brush still over each tooth and let the vibrations do the work for you. You do not need to make any brushing motions as this can actually irritate your gums more and cause them to recede more, eventually leading to more tooth sensitivity. By letting the electric toothbrush do most of the work, the gums are less irritated and the teeth are cleaned more efficiently.
If you are using a manual toothbrush:
It is recommended to use a soft bristle toothbrush because the softer bristles do not irritate the gums as much as firmer bristles. Unlike electric toothbrushes, you need brush your teeth in small circular motions. This helps release the bacteria growth that is commonly found between teeth and beneath the gumlines. Back-and-forth motions can be too aggressive and can agitate the gums, which can lead to root exposure and consequent sensitivity.
