What is the difference between a general dentist and a specialist?

While both are dentists, general dentists and specialists usually have different goals and focuses. Like the titles suggest, one focuses more on a broader range of procedures while the other focuses on a specific field within dentistry.

General dentists’ procedures range from simple check ups to more complex cases like surgeries, extractions, and root canals.  For most dental visits, you will be seeing a general dentist unless you are in need of specialized treatment. At our office, our general dentist Dr. Jessica Ko covers a variety of different procedures. Some of these procedures include cleanings, fillings, crowns/bridges, invisalign, and root canals.

A specialist is a general dentist who attended addition training in their specialized field within dentistry. There are many different types of specialities in the dental field such as orthodontics, periodontics, and more. At our office our specialist is Dr. Philip Koh who is a board certified Prosthodontist, who specializes in implants, dentures and restorations.
